Ecotourism in an Educational Context: Promoting
Learning Opportunities Through Travel
Tourism is a strong and reliable motor of growth in the global economy. International
tourist arrivals exceeded one billion during 2012, accounting for 1 in 11 jobs and generating
over US$1 trillion in receipts worldwide (WTO 2013). Geographically speaking,
Europe continues to dominate the global market, accounting for around 52% of international
tourist arrivals, but 2012 saw Chinese visitors accounting for the single biggest
tourism expenditure for the first time, with spending increasing from US$13 billion in
2000 to US$102 billion in 2012. Perhaps most significantly, tourism has displayed
remarkable resilience in the wake of recent financial crises, with consistent annual growth
in total arrivals and total spend in the order of 3-4% since 2000.
