Educators policymakers agree that there is an urgent need to rethink the assumptions around teaching the increasing numbers of English language learners (ELLs) in the United States. To bring those students to academic success in a limited period of time, educators need a working knowledge of the systems that compose English and how students are expected to use them for success in reading and writing.
